The PS5 got a price hike in several regions

Tracking down a PS5 has been an ordeal for almost two years because of supply chain issues, and it’s probably about to get more challenging.

On Thursday, Sony announced that the PS5 is increasing in price throughout Europe, Canada, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and Latin America. For now, it appears there won’t be a price increase in the United States. According to Sony Interactive Entertainment president & CEO Jim Ryan, this decision came about due to global economic woes.

“The global economic environment is a challenge that many of you around the world are no doubt experiencing,” Ryan said via the PlayStation Blog. “We’re seeing high global inflation rates, as well as adverse currency trends, impacting consumers and creating pressure on many industries.”

Regrettably, there wasn’t any hard clarification from Sony as to whether or not this increase in cost is permanent.

“While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business,” Ryan continues. “Our top priority continues to be improving the PS5 supply situation so that as many players as possible can experience everything that PS5 offers and what’s still to come.”

It’s a steep ask for anyone living in the countries mentioned above. For example, in Canada, the digital edition PS5 went from $499.99 CAD to $519.99 CAD. Meanwhile, the disk drive edition is now $649.99 CAD, up from $629 CAD.

The console is still selling well, in any event. Best pray that your kids don’t want one this holiday. If so, we have the perfect list for you.
