The answer is no! Stop asking these questions!
Not everything needs a post-credits scene. I’m not sure what the obsession with them is, but I know we can all blame the Marvel Cinematic Universe for the odd reliance on them now. At least it makes sense for those films (and other franchise films). There, it is used to tease another installment. With a movie like Wicked: For Good, what are they teasing? Why would they tease anything?
The film itself is already over two hours long and expanded from the source material. If you need a post-credits scene on that, then you did something wrong! It isn’t like we’re being teased a Wizard of Oz remake. It would have been acceptable at the end of the first installment, but it would just add to an already-bloated runtime for this one.
The fact of the matter is, the fact that we’ve been conditioned to always wonder if there is a post-credits scene for any movie is a failure of the industry. If you look back at all the films with them, the ones that aren’t superhero or other tentpole franchises are post-credits scenes that have been cemented into pop culture history because they’re good.
For example, the post-credits scene from 1980’s Airplane! serves as a dual-sided joke. The customer in the cab waiting for Striker (Robert Hays) to return checks his watch and says, “Well, I’ll give him another 20 minutes, but that’s it!”
Not only is it a joke spilling over from the film itself, but it is also a joke about waiting until after for another scene. We used to be a proper country.
All that said, post-credits scenes are still great, they just need to serve a purpose in either moving the story forward or telling a joke. But they aren’t necessary.
