Perhaps one of the most spectacular settings in Outlander, the gardens of the Palace at Versailles are where Claire and Jamie spend time in the court of King Louis XV in season 2. Did you know though, that the actual gardens used for filming are in Scotland and not France?
The manicured grounds of Perthshire's Drummond Castle stood in for the ornate park and orchard of the famous French Palace. Found near the town of Crieff, the historic estate has a series of formal terraced gardens, which date back to the 1630s and even have links to the Jacobite movement.
Considered to be one of the finest examples of their kind in Europe, the gardens were redesigned and terraced in the 19th Century before being replanted in the 1950s, they also feature a beech tree planted by Queen Victoria, commemorating her visit in 1842.
A popular filming site, due to their incredible layout and design, the gardens were also used in the film Rob Roy.

Can you visit the Drummond Castle Gardens?
Though the Gardens are closed over winter, they open to the public from May 1 until October 31. It should be noted that the castle itself is privately owned and not open to the public.
History and the Jacobite connection
Owned by the Drummond family from the 14th century, the Dukes of Perth were heavily involved in both the 1715 and 1745 Jacobite Risings leading to the estate being forfeited after the defeat of the rising at Culloden, though the castle was eventually returned into Drummond hands. It is still owned by a part of the family, though the Gardens are run and maintained by the Grimsthorpe and Drummond Castle Trust.
Outlander filming
These stunning Gardens doubled as the Royal Gardens of Versailles in the season 2 episode 'Untimely Resurrection', where Claire and Jamie once again meet the Duke of Sandringham and of course bump into the villainous 'Black Jack' Randall.
