The One Show's Alex Jones shares touching story about how her young son responded to Queen's death

Alex Jones has shared a touching story about how her young son responded to the Queen's death. The Welsh presenter, from Ammanford, was back on screens on Saturday night to host a special episode of The One Show alongside Gethin Jones.

BBC One announced the weekday programme would be airing a one-off weekend show to look back at the life of the Queen, who died aged 96 and was Britain's longest-reigning monarch. As they opened the show Gethin spoke about how the Queen had touched all generations, with Alex explaining that her eldest son Teddy, who is five years old, had lots of questions.

"When I got home on Thursday the first thing he said was "mama are you okay?' He understood the importance," Alex explained to her co-host. The 45-year-old then went on to add that her little one wondered what he should do with all his books that featured the Queen.

Alex continued: "He said, 'well what will we do with all our books?' Peppa goes to London, the Queen is in it, and then Paddington goes to the Palace, because it's all about going to see the Queen."

The mum-of-three then revealed that every time the famous sketch between Paddington Bear and the Queen appears in media coverage her sons "light up". The clip, which aired just three months ago during the Platinum Jubilee celebrations, sees the longest-reigning monarch joke to the beloved bear that she liked to keep marmalade sandwiches in her handbag and even pulled one out to prove it.

"Every time this sketch has been shown on the news coverage, he absolutely lights up, as does his brother Kit who is only three," Alex said. "But it's really connected the Queen with the younger generation, hasn't it. It's really special."

Alex added: "It doesn't get old, does it? You can watch it over and over, it's just lovely."

Prior to The One Show, Alex wrote on Instagram that she felt "very privileged" to be hosting the one-off special in honour of Her Majesty the Queen. She told her followers: "I feel very privileged to be presenting a special One Show tribute to her Majesty the Queen shortly on BBC One."

Buckingham Palace announced the Queen had passed away on Thursday, September 8. A statement read: "The Queen died peacefully at Balmoral this afternoon. The King and The Queen Consort will remain at Balmoral this evening and will return to London tomorrow." For more showbiz and television stories, get our newsletter here.
