Legendary comedian Jennifer Saunders will portray Mother Superior for the upcoming Sister Act musical tour in Manchester and London. However, on BBC's The One Show, the 63-year-old admitted to not being a confident singer, especially among the superstar performers also in the cast.
Saunders said: “I can’t sing like a professional singer and there’s so many great singers in this show.” The star of Absolutely Fabulous continued: “It takes a lot of energy to sing really loudly and really well but I’m getting more confident.”
Jennifer was sitting alongside fellow theatre performer Matt Lucas, most notably appearing in Les Misérables, and when asked for some advice by presenter Jermaine Jenas, he provided some insight into how he would prepare his voice before letting rip. He said: “Whenever I’m in a musical, I always steam my voice, at least twice a day.
“So there’s these things called Dr Nelson's Inhalers, I think they’re Victorian, and they’re just a ceramic pot, they look a little bit like a teapot. And you put boiling water in them and then they’ve got a kind of glass tube out the top and you inhale, and I do that.
“I get up in the morning and I don’t speak for hours and hours and hours, I just inhale and I probably don’t even start talking until 4 in the afternoon. I’m quite a diva.”
Whether Jennifer Saunders takes that advice, we will have to wait and see. She will be performing in Sister Act from June 27 at the Palace Theatre Manchester and from July 19 at London’s Eventim Apollo.
