Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has passed The Dark Knight to become his highest-grossing film ever in the US, proving a three-hour, R-rated take on a 3,000-year-old Greek poem can beat Batman without a single superhero.

The milestone landed over the weekend, the film's sixth in cinemas. Box office figures showed The Odyssey added $19.5 million domestically to reach $539 million (£395 million), clearing the $534.9 million (£392 million) The Dark Knight earned in 2008.
