The Odyssey and cake are a winning combination

Reading The Odyssey has been a very enjoyable experience for me and my friends (Christopher Nolan has made an Odyssey for our times – by sacrificing the delicious darkness of Homer’s epic, 25 July).

We are a group of six women in our 70s who have been meeting regularly over the last three years, predominantly to read the classics. We meet in each other’s houses, each of us taking a turn in reading out loud, and finish with a cup of tea and, if we’re lucky, a piece of cake.

So far, we have read Dante’s Divine Comedy and The Odyssey, and we are now working our way through The Iliad. We all love it – it has cemented our friendship and enhanced our lives. It’s never too late to pick up the classics.
