Here is the Nottinghamian from Friday, January 6:
Hello,
Today's edition of the Nottinghamian takes a look at the 'relentless' pressue facing NHS services across Nottingham. It comes as a leading A&E nurse has said the problem is the worst she has seen in her whole career.
We will also take a look at negotiations between a non-profit cafe and a local council in order to keep it going. Plus we see inside a new city centre restaurant and takeaway and I give a recommendation for you to try this weekend.
Relentless
A leading Nottingham A&E nurse has laid bare the 'relentless' challenges currently facing the NHS, claiming it has been the worst she has seen in 32 years. Lou Davis, a sister in Queen's Medical Centre's emergency department, said the problems staff and patients are contending with are "far, far worse" than she has ever seen in her career.
Nottingham University Hospitals (NUH), and the wider Nottinghamshire healthcare system, remain in a 'critical incident' due to high demand in recent weeks. Lou, who has appeared on the new series of 24 Hours in A&E, said: "We are staffed for the number of patients that we should have and we're stretching that by three, four or five times the number of patients we should have in the department, which is tough.
"What you see when you walk through the door and the people sitting in chairs - that's the tip of the iceberg. We've got many more patients on trolleys who actually do need to be going into hospital but we don't have the beds available." She added: "At the minute the service is creaking at the seams and we are struggling. I will walk 30,000 steps in a shift. You don't stop, you don't go to the loo." Read more here.
Negotiations
Council landlords of a popular community cafe have confirmed they do not intend to close the venue, despite ongoing negotiations over its future. Ashfield District Council, landlord of the Rumbles Community Café, extended the lease of the café for a short period of time so that negotiations could take place for a new agreement.
The venue's rent, maintenance and bills have been "significantly subsidised" by the district council during the period of their tenancy, but now the local authority said it is aiming to find a more suitable and sustainable solution for a new agreement.
The popular non-profit eatery, which provides work opportunities for local people with disabilities, has been operating for 15 years. Local residents signed a petition in support of keeping the café open, which reached over 4,000 signatures and was backed by Ashfield MP Lee Anderson. Read more here.

Recommendation
Name: The Cod's Scallops
Address: Carrington, Wollaton, Long Eaton, West Bridgford
Cuisine: Fish, seafood, pies and chips
What better way to kick off a January weekend than with a hearty serving of fish and chips. But of course, at Cod's Scallops it is not just any old fish and chips. The restaurant and takeaway have been awarded multiple National Fish and Chip Awards, taking the top spot in 2020.
Unlike most chippies which just serve cod, you can pick from over twenty different species of fish which are all cooked to order. The menu changes daily depending on the catch, so you can expect a fresh meal. You can also say how you want your fish to be cooked. From either batter, beef-dripping batter or baked in garlic, lemon and herbs for a gluten free, healthy alternative.
With four sites across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, many residents can now call a Cod Scallops' their local. Even if not, it definitely is worth a trip to try one out for yourself. Plus in January, there is currently 23% off all food to bring in the new year.
New opening
A new sushi takeaway and restaurant has opened in the city centre offering homemade sushi rolls, poke bowls and hot food. KOKORO, based in Exchange Walk just off Market Square, gives customers the option to grab and go as boxes are made up ahead of time.
There are 12 members of staff working in the new restaurant which is spread over two floors with seating upstairs. KOKORO has more than 50 branches across the UK, including London and Leicester, but this is the first Nottingham branch.
Jun Domaradzki, 22, is the manager of the Eastbourne branch of KORORO is assisting the opening of the new Nottingham site and has been working for the brand since he was 17. He said: "Our best-selling hot food would be the chicken katsu curries along with sweet chilli chicken and sweet and sour chicken. All are very delicious dishes. When it comes to sushi, the salmon lover and deluxe boxes are popular so that way you can have a selection, not just salmon prawn."
