Here is today's edition of The Nottinghamian:

Hello,

Today's edition of the Nottinghamian brings the news of further development at the former Broadmarsh centre site. The gateway to the city is slowly improving and the vision is soon becoming a reality.

We will also discuss another shop closure, this time in Sneinton Market. As well as where to catch the Tour of Britain race around Nottinghamshire tomorrow and hear people's thoughts on the hot topic of the day.

A new vision

Transformation plans for the former Broadmarsh shopping centre site is 'taking shape'. New paving has been laid, trees and planters introduced and amphitheatre-style steps have been constructed.

Over recent years the site has seen the addition of a brand new car park and bus station, cycle lane and vibrant murals under the tram bridge. Now work to re-surface and pave Middle Hill is scheduled for next week and Collin Street will soon be pedestrianised. It will link to the Sussex Street area via new "amphitheatre-style steps" which are currently under construction.

There's a new walkway between Collin Street and Lister Gate, also soon to be called the 'Green Heart'. The work has been paid for following a successful bid to the Government's Transforming Cities fund, with around £20m allocated to create the new gateway to the city centre. The council has also submitted a bid to the Levelling Up fund for a further £20m to redevelop the remaining section of the shopping centre site. Read more on the plans here.

Sign of the times

The shutters are down and a sad face emoji on the window signals the closure of Butter + Sugar at Sneinton Market. The shop, which opened in November last year, was an amalgamation of retail and cake-making business Sugarberry Cake Studio.

Fran Jesson and business partner Gavin Butterworth merged the two to open the shop which was designed as a "feel good" space showcasing the work of little known local artists. She announced that she was hanging up her apron on Instagram with a poignant message about how tough the current climate is.

Fran said: "Bills, cost of ingredients, sales dropping and the rest. I thought naively at the beginning of this year, that the worst was over after the Covid years had passed. The reality is really different, very stressful and very hard. I'll be honest. I'm just tired. Really tired. I feel like I'm working longer hours, working myself to the ground and I don't feel like I'm getting much back for the hard work."

Notts says

We hear your thoughts on the hot topic of the day (Lisa Walsh)

Today marks Liz Truss' first day as Prime Minister and talk has turned to how she will tackle the on going energy crisis. We headed into Old Market Square to ask: "What should be in Liz Truss' energy plan?"

Sally-Ann Green, 36, from Carlton said: "Oh I don't know really. As long as she helps with energy bills then that is all I am bothered about."

Michael Parks, 64, who is from Bulwell, added: "She needs to stop everyone worrying and reduce the energy bills somehow, maybe with a price freeze. We can't go on like it is anymore."

29 year old Sam Johnston from Hucknall said: "She needs to make it cheaper and stop all the stress everyone is under. It is not fair and the energy companies are charging way too much."

200th cake store

Manager Vikas Sangwan and chief executive Sukh Chamdal at Cake Box in Sneinton Dale (Nottingham Post/Marie Wilson.)

A cake shop in Sneinton Dale has become the 200th Cake Box in the UK as it officially cut the ribbon today. It is one of the first of the chain to be in a residential area and hope to become part of the community.

Cake Box offer a range of fresh cream cakes, cupcakes and ice creams. All products don't include egg which makes their cakes "cater to the whole community". The manager of the store, Vikas Sangwan, says the reaction from the local community has been great.

When it comes to favourite cakes, perhaps unsurprisingly, Nottingham has a clear winner: forest fruits. "Forest fruits is a favourite with our customers as it's got fresh cream and fruit. The Black Forest cake is another favourite, too," Vikas said. The cake chain have already got a location on Radford Road and are planning to expand further across Nottingham.
