The Nottinghamian: Big plans for Nottingham airport - and one lucky cat's tale

Stay up to date with all the latest stories across Nottinghamshire in the daily Nottinghamian newsletter. You can receive the newsletter straight to your inbox every weekday by signing up right here.

Here is the Nottinghamian from Tuesday, February 7.

Hello,

Today's edition of the Nottinghamian brings news of the demolition of Nottingham City Airport. Plans include creating more than 1,000 homes on the site.

We will also take a look at developments taking place at a Nottinghamshire power station, set to be a UK first. Plus we take a look back into Nottingham's past and hear one lucky cat's tale.

Big plans

New plans for the demolition of Nottingham City Airport in Tollerton could see a large number of homes to be built on the site. Vistry Homes Limited has proposed a Environmental Impact Assessment scoping request for development on land at the Tollerton Airfield. The developers are proposing to submit a hybrid planning application to build up to 1,600 homes.

The plans would involve the demolition of the cafe and air traffic control building as well as the removal of the airport runway. If a planning application is put forward to Rushcliffe Borough Council, the development could see a new local centre, a primary school and supporting infrastructure including highways improvements, open space and sports pitches.

'Accelerate' progress

West Burton, near Retford (Bassetlaw District Council)

A new company has been created to "accelerate" progress on a major project at a Nottinghamshire power station which is expected to create 10,000 jobs. The UK's first ever nuclear fusion energy plant will be based at the West Burton A power station near Retford.

The Government is planning to end the use of coal power in the UK by October 2024 and, as part of this, the country's three remaining coal-fired powered stations are being decommissioned. Two of the remaining plants are in Nottinghamshire, with plans having already been revealed for the future of the Ratcliffe-on-Soar site.

The West Burton plant was announced last year as the location where the UK's first Spherical Tokamak for Energy Production plant will be based, beating other locations including Moorside in Cumbria and Goole in Yorkshire. Some Nottinghamshire MPs have claimed the project could replace the county's lost mining jobs, with the site expected to become operational in 2040. Read more here.

Trivia question: Wollaton Hall was used to represent a stately home in which 2012 Hollywood blockbuster?

The answer to today's trivia question is at the bottom of the newsletter.

Notts nostalgia

There are lots of grand examples of Watson Fothergill buildings across Nottingham city centre, from his offices on George Street to the Pakistani Centre on Woodborough Road. However, there are a few that still remain pubs including the Castle pub on Castle Gate. It was designed in 1883 for a Mr Tate. The building was known as Mortimer House and the row once housed a row of shops and offices.

Fothergill is one of the best-known Victorian architects and he was born in Mansfield in 1841. He left school at 15 before going to work for Frederick Jackson, civil engineer, architect and surveyor, where he started to learn about architecture and then established his own architectural practice in Clinton Street.

You can recognise his distinctive builds due to their gothic style, red and blue bricks, and stone and black timber used for eaves and balconies. The Fothergill and Castle pub and kitchen have many of these features including a tower over the top of one of the windows on the building at the end of the row.

A square tower can be seen above what was once the Old Castle Inn and there is a rounded turret that caps the lower end of the row. The building is listed including the beautiful stained glass windows which are decorated throughout the pub. One window shows Robin Hood and Maid Marian. Read more here.

Off-duty hero

Inspector Daniel Bradshaw spotted Dexter the cat while driving home from work (RSPCA)

An off-duty RSPCA inspector has been reunited with an injured cat he thought was dead. Inspector Daniel Bradshaw spotted a cat by the side of the road in Rainworth, Nottinghamshire, on the way home from a shift last October. He saw the shape of a cat which he thought was dead.

Daniel decided to pull over to move the body as he didn't want it to get hit by other cars and knew if the cat was chipped he could let the owners know. Much to Daniel's surprise, the cat sat up. The cat had a collar on and was also microchipped so Daniel was able to make contact with the cat's owner, Sally Edwards. The feline was called Dexter.

Sally was on holiday and Dexter was being looked after by a family member. Last month, Daniel was reunited with Dexter, who has made a full recovery. Daniel said: "It was so lovely to see Dexter - even though I'm not sure he was as delighted as me - as he seemed quite aloof! Despite his injuries 14-month old Dexter made a great recovery and his delighted owner called me to let me know. I was so pleased to hear that he had gone from what I thought was being dead - to being reunited with his loving family."

Dexter's owner Sally added: "I cannot thank Daniel enough. He is an absolute hero and it is so refreshing and reassuring to know there are some wonderful human beings in the world like Daniel."
