Here is the Nottinghamian from Monday, February 27.
Hello,
Today's edition of the Nottinghamian takes a look at Nottinghamshire being ranked as one of the most dangerous places to live in the UK. It comes after new ONS data shows the worst places for crime.
We will also take a look at a takeaway closure and a Hucknall pub scooping up another award. Plus we see how a Nottingham woman celebrated her birthday in a record breaking way.
Most dangerous
Nottinghamshire has been named the 18th most dangerous place to live in the UK, official figures suggest. New data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS) has revealed which are the worst places in the UK for crime.
And Nottinghamshire has claimed the 18th spot - with 88 crimes a year per 1,000 people. While many expected London and Greater Manchester to be the most crime-ridden areas in England and Wales, the northern county of Cleveland - which includes Hartlepool, Middlesbrough, Cleveland and Stockton-on-Tees - took the top spot.
Closure
A restaurant and takeaway specialising in gourmet burgers has closed its doors. Ohannes opened in Sherwood in July 2020 on the corner of Mansfield Road and Marshall Street - the third venue in the chain at the time after Arnold and Nottingham city centre.
The Turkish-founded brand's handmade burgers are served in a sweet pretzel bun. As well as a classic beef burger and cheeseburger, there's the Meat Mania, Peri Peri Chicken and the Big Lebowski, topped with salsa, red kidney beans and jalapeno.
Signs have already been removed from the premises, which for several years were empty. Director Murat Yer said: "It is too close to the city and Arnold branches. This is the reason for closure." Ohannes also has branches in Beeston, Hucknall, Mansfield and over the Derbyshire border in Ilkeston. Extending to other parts of the UK, the burgers are on sale in Liverpool and Preston.

Award winner
If you're a cider fan, Hucknall is the place to drink. The town swept the board with pubs taking top spot and runner-up in CAMRA's annual Cider Pub of the Year competition.
Byron's Rest, a micro pub set in a former sewing shop in Baker Street took the crown, closely followed by Beer Shack, in Derbyshire Lane, in second place. Byron's Rest sells nearly 20 different traditional ciders from cideries including Two Shires at Langley Mill, Blue Barrel, which started in Nottingham, and Somerset-based Rich's Cider.
It's the second award in six months for the Byron's Rest, which last year was named champion of Nottingham CAMRA's LocAle competition celebrating locally brewed beers and ciders. Read more here.
One way to celebrate
A woman from Nottingham has celebrated her 40th birthday in a record breaking way. Rebecca Brough was surprised by the 'UK's biggest doughnut' as part of her birthday celebrations.
The giant doughnut weighed 40 kilo and was filled with both raspberry jam and chocolate. It was then topped with vanilla cream, chocolate icing, chocolate fudge brownies, raspberries, golden Dairy Milk chunks and swirls of caramel cream.
The creation was made by Derby-based Project D who were approached to create the one-off whopper by Rebecca's husband Marc. The giant doughnut measured 1.4 metres in diameter. It contained 170,000 calories - the same as around 740 Mars Bars or 1,400 large bananas.
Max Poynton, operations director for Project D, said: “We’re over the moon to have been invited to play such a big part in both Rebecca’s special birthday and Cubo’s third birthday celebrations. Our design and bakery teams definitely came up trumps with Rebecca’s monster doughnut cake. As far as we can find out, it’s the UK’s biggest doughnut by a long way.”
