Love them or hate them, musicals always tend to elicit a strong reaction from viewers. Some, such as our editor (me), have a soft spot for the classics. Even now, his heart skips a few beats if he hears the opening note of any of The Rocky Horror Picture Show’s multitude of bangers. Others, like a forever-grump who has asked not to be named (it’s senior staff writer, Harry McKerrell), hate them.
But regardless of your feelings, there’s no denying that a good musical’s potent mix of audiovisual elements can make them a great way to test your home cinema set-up. Whether it’s Cynthia Erivo’s powerhouse delivery of Defying Gravity in Wicked, or the visually stunning recreation of Queen’s Live Aid performance in Bohemian Rhapsody, a good musical can lay bare the flaws of many a system.
