The Night Manager starring Tom Hiddleston was recently rumoured to be returning for a second season, seven years after its original release date.
The spy thriller was a smash hit on its original BBC run, receiving high viewing figures and positive reviews. However, given how long had passed since its first series, many fans had given up hope on the spy thriller returning.
Thankfully, according to Deadline, the BBC and Amazon Prime Video have joined forces to produce a new season. Since it has been such a long time since its original broadcast, here is a rundown of what the series is about, as well as details about the new season.

What is the Night Manager about?
The Night Manager follows Jonathan Pine, played by Tom Hiddleston, as a night manager of a luxury hotel in Egypt. As a former British soldier, he is recruited by Foreign Office official Angela Burr, played by Olivia Coleman, to investigate illegal arms deals.
Jonathan is tasked with infiltrating the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Roper, played by Hugh Laurie. The show is based on the John le Carré novel of the same name.
How did season one end?
At the end of the last series, Richard was finally arrested in Egypt. Meanwhile, Jonathan had called off his romance with Jemima "Jed" Marshall, played by Elizabeth Debicki.
Will there be a season two?
The BBC has not officially announced the return of The Night Manager. An extensive report in Deadline has claimed that the BBC is working with Amazon Prime to produce a new series, though it is yet to be formally greenlit by the two companies.
The latest instalment has been developed under the code name Steelworks. Furthermore, the report claims The Night Manager will receive backing for a second and third season.
What will be the plot of season two?
John le Carré never wrote a sequel to The Night Manager, preferring his stories to be standalone affairs. This means there is no existing blueprint as to what season two could revolve around.
In the Deadline report announcing the series’ return, it claimed that Jonathan will be informed of Richard’s death in custody. Apparently this will mean Jonathan will have to deal with a “new, even more deadly challenge”.
Who will be returning?
Given previous reports, it seems very likely that Tom Hiddleston will be returning as Johnathan. Richard’s death rules out a return for the arms dealer.
There has been no further news on other cast members. However, Jed coming back into the picture would not be a huge surprise given her unresolved romance with Jonathan at the end of last season.
Deadline has reported that season one writer David Farr will pen the next instalment. There has been no confirmation on whether original director Susanne Bier will return too.
When will season two be released?
Again, details on the second season remain sketchy. Deadline has claimed filming on the second series will begin later this year in London and South America.
If this is the case, season two would not be released until 2024 at the earliest. As per the agreement, the series would be shown on the BBC in the UK and on Amazon Prime internationally.
