The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday afternoon, but there’s already one clear winner

This is the online version of our daily newsletter, The Morning WinSubscribe to get irreverent and incisive sports stories, delivered to your mailbox every morning.

The NFL trade deadline is Tuesday afternoon at 4 p.m. ET , which means there’s still plenty of time for teams in contention to make some moves that could make them serious Super Bowl contenders.

But no matter what happens later today, there’s already one clear winner of this whole trade deadline thing and it’s the San Francisco 49ers.

Duh.

The 49ers went out two weeks ago and made a trade that is already paying off and making them serious contenders in the NFC.

The 49ers went out and made a trade that has had the type of immediate impact and success that every other team is looking to have with any possible moves they make later today.

The 49ers went out and got star RB Christian McCaffrey from the Panthers and now they have some real championship hopes.

If you need proof of that, check out McCaffrey did just a few days ago against the Rams in Los Angeles – he ran for TD, caught a TD pass, and threw a TD pass in the 49ers’ 31-14 beatdown of their NFC West rivals.

It took pretty much just one full week for Kyle Shanahan to find awesome ways to get McCaffrey the ball and to make other teams in the NFC pay for not going out and getting a deal done for the former Carolina Panther.

What made McCaffrey’s performance all the more impressive on Sunday was that Deebo Samuel was out with an injury. Imagine what this team is going to look like when Deebo is healthy and playing alongside McCaffrey? That offense is going to be really darn hard to figure out/stop, even if Jimmy Garoppolo isn’t the most dependable quarterback in the world.

The 49ers made their big move in 2022 and now time is running out for other teams to do the same.

I’m guessing there will be a lot of news today and I’m rooting for total chaos.

But I already know who the big winner is – the 49ers.
