Fresh from the recent boost of its ON e-MTB range with the new and updated Strive, Torque and Grand Canyon e-MTB models. Canyon now continues its assault on the best electric mountain bike market with the all-new Neuron:ON CF. That they say is its most adventure-ready e-MTB to date.
Canyon has redesigned the entire bike from the ground up to make the Neuron:ON CF a true adventure electric mountain bike. The German brand says the Neuron:ON is more than capable of handling any terrain, will efficiently deal with any climb, and deliver power to deal with any obstacle. The Neuron:ON also has improved range to allow riders to go beyond the map and back again, whilst being comfortable and light enough not to weigh its rider down. We had a look at the new range to find out what's new on the Canyon Neuron:ON CF.
Frame, geometry and power
Aluminum was the only option on the previous models of the Neuron:ON and aluminum options remain, but Canyon says the highlight of the latest generation is the new full-carbon frames. Increased strength and a substantial weight reduction have been achieved using intricate, all-new carbon layup schedules and delivers an efficient frame architecture, with a claimed weight saving of two kilograms compared to the previous aluminum model.
As mentioned the Canyon Neuron:ON has been completely reworked from the ground up, with the aim of making it more capable and fun on the downs and more efficient on the ups. Canyon therefore has increased the suspension travel to 140mm up front which they say will increase the Neuron:ON CF’s off-road capability, and comes from either Fox or RockShox depending on model chosen.
Geometry changes are all aimed to deliver extra rider confidence and depending on the frame size means the reach has grown by between 10 and 45mm and the head angle has slackened by 1 to 2 degrees. Standover height is reduced, again depending on frame size, by 15 to 19mm, which now means that the bike can handle even longer dropper posts, boosting the descending capabilities of the Neuron:ON CF.
Additional geometry tweaks have been added to boost climbing ability with the chainstays growing between 10 to 15mm, and the seat tube angle steepened by 1.5 to 2 degrees, again depending on frame size, but aimed Canyon adds to increase balance and move rider weight forward for a better, more efficient climbing position.
Finally, the Canyon Neuron:ON CF is now exclusively rolling on 29-inch wheels and is powered by the fourth and latest generation of the Bosch Performance Line CX High-Torque Drive Unit. It's powered by Bosch PowerTube batteries with a capacity of up to 750Wh, which Canyon says delivers plenty power with 85Nm of torque. The Neuron:ON CF 7 has the option of a 625Wh or 750Wh battery, the larger option adding £200 / €200 to the price tag, with all other models in the range having a 750Wh battery as standard.
Connectivity and security
The Neuron:ON CF connects to the digital world via the Bosch eBike Flow app and will connect riders to their bike, which enables riders to configure motor settings, navigate and plan routes via Komoot and even keep the bike safe. The bike also offers comprehensive anti-theft and bike tracking functions via the built-in Bosch ConnectModule and eBike Flow app.
The ConnectModule and app work together to turn the rider’s smartphone into a digital key to their e-bike. The eBike Alarm automatically activates as soon as the bike is turned off and will emit alarm signals if movement is detected. Should the bike be moved significantly, the system will instantly notify its owner via their smartphone, with prolonged movement automatically starting the tracking function.
The Bosch ConnectModule is pre-installed in all Neuron:ON CF models and includes a free 12-month subscription to the eBike Alarm function following activation. The subscription automatically ends after the free 12-month period unless it’s renewed for €4.99 per month or €39.99 per year.
