Visitor Operations and Experience Manager
£36,000 per annum
The National Trust is seeking a Visitor Experience and Operations Manager at the Castlefield Viaduct to lead a team responsible for bringing the Grade II listed viaduct back into use as a free-to-access park and meeting place for people and nature.
Duties within this role include:
- Leading and delivering a quality visitor experience operation at a new city-centre site, organising tours and events and working extensively with visitors and partners across the city.
- Overseeing the visitor operation, analysing and interpreting audience data/insight, championing the audience voice, and working with colleagues to improve the visitor journey and visitor programming.
- Acting as lead for quality standards in interpretation, presentation and service culture across all aspects of the visitor experience and visitor journey, working together with members of the site team, the Manchester Portfolio and wider Trust teams to meet these standards.
- Responsibility for strategically planning and budgeting while contributing to the wider project development.
Candidates should have demonstrable experience of leading visitor operations and managing facilities for the public to a very high standard, as well as experience of creating and tailoring an excellent visitor experience to achieve clear project aims. They should also be confident with managing health and safety, compliance and risk, with a track record of identifying and managing risks to the business.
This is a fixed-term contract for 18 months. It is based at the Castlefield Viaduct, with frequent travel to the Manchester Hub, Quarry Bank Mill and Dunham Massey.

Collections Assistant
£9.90 per hour
The Trust has two vacancies for the customer facing role of Collections Assistants at the former cotton mill Quarry Bank Mill in Styal, Wilmslow.
Duties within this role include:
- Helping with the day-to-day cleaning and care of the collections.
- Keeping a keen eye on everything from the environmental conditions in a room, to signs of wear and tear.
- Keeping accurate records.
- Talking to visitors about the work and the collections the Trust has.
The ideal candidate will be well organised, adaptable, customer focused and have a positive attitude. Good manual dexterity and eye-to-hand skills are also essential, with ability to work from ladders and tower scaffold.
This is a part-time role with 13.5 hours per week required over three days with regular weekend working. It is a fixed-term contract until February 2026.

Cook
£21,021 per annum
There is an opportunity to join the National Trust’s Food and Beverage team at the historic Georgian house of Dunham Massey, Altrincham.
Duties within this role include:
- Preparing high quality dishes and products from scratch using fresh/seasonal ingredients and in line with the centrally produced cookbook.
- Following brand guidelines, policies and procedures of National Trust.
- Complying with the Food Safety Management System.
- The role may include being involved with ordering and managing stock and controlling all costs.
The ideal candidate will be confident with creating bakes, making, soups, stews, sausage rolls and preparing and presenting food to order served directly to the customers over busy lunchtime periods. The successful candidate will receive a bespoke induction, allergen/food safety training and the coaching required to fulfil the role.
This is a full-time role with 37.5 hours per week required, including some weekend working.

General Tradesperson
£23,088 per annum
The 3,000-acre estate of Dunham Massey, Altrincham also has an opportunity to join its team as a General Builder/Tradesperson.
Duties within this role include:
- Providing a highly professional and practical building service to the Trust’s historic mansions, houses and other buildings.
- Using practical, hands-on experience to ensure the Trust can continue to conserve and maintain its assets for future generations by providing the highest standards of skills.
- Assisting with completing planned routine cyclical maintenance works and emergency repair works across the portfolio.
- Undertaking works such as lime pointing, carpentry, traditional roofing, gutter repairs and drainage works, as well as being involved with small projects such as cottage refurbishments.
The ideal candidate will have an understanding of historic building techniques and maintenance requirements, with knowledge of at least three trade specialisms, such as joinery, masonry, roofing or plumbing.
Experience of working alongside and managing contractors would also be advantageous.
This role can be offered as full-time or part-time to the right candidate. It is a fixed-term contract until April 25, 2026.

Assistant Ranger
£9.90 per hour
The Trust is looking to add an Assistant Ranger to its team at the Peak District mansion Lyme Park in Disley, Stockport, working across its 1,400-acre site.
Duties within this role include:
- Maintaining green spaces and helping with the protection and care of habitats, wildlife, property and machinery.
- Engaging with visitors and making time to talk to them, not rushing away to the next task.
- Assisting with guided visitor walks and delivering a wide range of engaging visitor experiences.
- Sharing and promoting the work of the National Trust, ensuring its properties can be enjoyed by everyone – this includes responding to queries and explaining the value of the work being undertaken.
The ideal candidates will be able to demonstrate practical experience in land, conservation and access management to level two or have six months vocational experience. They will also be willing to work outside in all weathers and deliver tasks when the weather conditions are not ideal.
Candidates must be able to commit to working regular weekend evenings for a seven-month period from March 26 to October 29, 2023. Working hours will be from 4pm to 8.30pm, Saturday to Sunday.
A full clean driving licence is also required.

Senior Gardener
£27,300 per annum
There is an opportunity at the National Trust’s Quarry Bank Mill in Styal, Wilmslow, for a dedicated and enthusiastic horticulturist to fill the newly created role of Senior Gardener.
Duties within this role include:
- Supervising the gardens to ensure visitors have an amazing experience in the dramatic and well-tended property.
- Engaging visitors.
- Helping to motivate the team, leading by example, with exceptional gardening skills.
- Managing the day-to-day workload for the team, while delivering exceptional training to new staff and volunteers and building positive working relationships across the property.
The ideal candidate will have significant practical experience in horticulture supported by relevant qualifications, in addition to supervisory experience from a similar role. They will be competent with the use and maintenance of garden machinery including chainsaws, tractors, hedge trimmers, and mowers.
Knowledge of relevant health and safety legislation and practice is also essential.
This is a full-time role with 37.5 hours per week required. It is a fixed-term contract until March 31, 2026.

Welcome and Service Assistant

The National Trust has two vacancies for Welcome and Service Assistants to provide fantastic customer service at the historic Castlefield Viaduct.
Duties within this role include:
- Introducing visitors to the project through a bespoke tour and conversation, setting them up for an amazing experience and encouraging them to support the future of the viaduct.
- Gathering and recording visitors’ opinions and feedback to feed into the possible evolution of the project.
- Answering questions and making sure visitors can find everything they need.
- Working with the visitor welcome team to link everything the Trust do back to its cause and work.
- Delivering high standards of presentation at the property and ensuring all communications with its visitors are clear and consistent, from the first click on the website, to the posters and signs around the property.
- Championing fundraising as a key way visitors can help the project grow to its full potential.
The ideal candidate will be flexible and adaptable with the ability to work in a team. They will also be organised and able to work with minimum supervision. Being enthusiastic and customer focused with a positive attitude is also essential.
These are part-time roles with 22.5 or 15 hours per week required, including weekend working. They are fixed-term contracts until September 1, 2024
