The Mustang Aftermarket Is Entering a New Era of Precision and Preservation

Jeff Pitman

Ford's Mustang remains one of the few performance cars capable of carrying six decades of cultural weight into a rapidly changing automotive market. The model was America's best-selling sports car again in 2024, according to S&P Global Mobility data cited by Ford, a title it maintains, with the nameplate representing more than half of the U.S. non-luxury sports car segment.

Yet the numbers also reveal a market in transition. Ford sold 44,003 gas-powered Mustangs in the U.S. during 2024, down 9.5% from 2023. Sales recovered slightly in 2025 to 45,333, according to Ford sales data. The shift has raised larger questions around what keeps an established performance car culturally relevant as buyers encounter an increasingly diversified automotive landscape.
