America's small-business economy is enormous enough to move the national economy and fragile enough for individual closures to reshape local communities. The latest Office for Advocacy figures put the number of small businesses at 36.2 million, accounting for 45.9% of private-sector employment and 43.5% of GDP.
The churn underneath those figures is equally striking. During the fourth quarter of 2025, private-sector establishments created 7.8 million jobs while losing 7.2 million, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics. Establishment deaths accounted for 1.4 million lost jobs during the quarter. Business failure therefore carries consequences well beyond an owner's balance sheet. It can remove jobs, weaken commercial districts, and alter the economic prospects of the people connected to a company.
