Major Leaguers officially arrived at spring training camps on Monday after the league and union reached an agreement to end the 99-day MLB lockout. And while everyone was certainly happy to be at camp, Mets first baseman Pete Alonso was especially grateful to be taking the field.
Speaking to reporters on Monday at Mets camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla., Alonso revealed that he was involved in a serious car crash on Sunday. According to Alonso, his Ford was hit by a red-light runner, and his car flipped multiple times before he had to kick out the windshield. His wife, Haley, was following in the car behind him and called the police.
Alonso added that the people in the car that hit him were also fine. He said he was lucky to be alive.

Alonso reflected on the crash:
“I’m just so happy. Every day is a gift. Today’s really special for me. I just had a blast out there today, doing work, seeing everybody. I don’t think I’ve ever been happier showing up to spring training. Again, it’s truly amazing how I’m here. I’m so fortunate that everyone’s OK. I’m just really happy that my wife sprung into action when she did. She was a trooper yesterday. A lot of emotional toll, but I’m here, happy and healthy.”

The crash happened in the Tampa area as Alonso and his wife were in the process of relocating for spring training camp. Thankfully, everyone involved was OK.
