It was more or less inevitable, but an Escape from New York remake is officially on the way.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, StudioCanal announced during a presentation at CinemaCon that an Escape from New York remake is officially a go... though we don't know which director or writer will helm the project.
You might recall that Radio Silence was previously attached to direct, with Leigh Whannell set to pen the script. This went out the window in 2024, with both Whannell and Radio Silence citing "scheduling issues."
The 1981 sci-fi action pic, directed by legend John Carpenter, famously stars Kurt Russell as former Green Beret and current federal prisoner Snake Plissken, who has just 24 hours to rescue the President of the United States in exchange for immunity. The film was a critical and commercial success, spawning the sequel Escape from L.A.
Funny enough, a live-action Metal Gear Solid movie was also just announced a few days ago (with Final Destination: Bloodlines directors Zach Lipovsky and Adam B. Stein at the helm). The game was heavily inspired by Escape from New York, with Carpenter going as far as to call it a "rip-off" (H/T The Hollywood Reporter). However, he decided not to sue because he knows creator Hideo Kojima and says he's "a nice guy."
Carpenter did, however, sue the 2012 French movie Lockout (co-written by none other than Luc Besson)... which sees Guy Pearce play a former CIA operative named Snow who is tasked with saving the President's daughter in exchange for total immunity. Sound familiar? The film was brought to court by StudioCanal and Carpenter as an "unauthorized remake," with the court ruling in favor of the latter.
