Stepping up to take a penalty in the World Cup is no sweat compared to singing dressed up as a giant doughnut, according to Michael Owen.
The former Liverpool footballer, 42, was unmasked as Doughnuts on The Masked Singer on Saturday night and admitted he was the “worst singer” ever to go on the show.
He said: “You can put one billion people in front of me on a football pitch, I would be absolutely fine.
“But put yourself in an arena where you just know that you’re absolutely awful at something and then go out and do it, you just feel like lambs to the slaughter. I was so nervous.”
Michael, who played for England in the 1998, 2002 and 2006 World Cups, said: “Taking a penalty for England in the World Cup can literally make or break your career. If you miss a penalty for England, you will forever be tarnished with that brush.
“However, when you go up there and do something you just simply know you cannot do in front of a live audience... you just literally go numb.”
He hoped it would help him shake off his “boring” image. He said: “I can have a laugh with the best of them.”
And Ray Winstone must have got a shock on Saturday night...
Daughter Jaime lied to him to cover her tracks so he didn’t clock she was The Masked Singer’s Firework.
“Mum and Dad will be most surprised, they have no idea,” she laughed after her elimination.
“I told them I was shooting a short film set in the future.”
Surely he recognised his firecracker...
