The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power - Amazon release date and what TV series is about

Lord of the Rings fans have been offered a glimpse of Amazon's highly anticipated TV series set before JRR Tolkien's fantasy stories.

A 60 second trailer for The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power, aired for the first time during Sunday's NFL Super Bowl.

The series, to be released on Amazon Prime's streaming platform, is set thousands of years before Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of The Rings books, which have both been transformed into movies and series.

“What else is out there?” a voice-over is heard to say during the trailer.

“There’s wonders in this world beyond our wandering. I can feel it.”

The trailer features cinematic landscapes including snowy mountain faces, raging seas and dark, mysterious forests.

Announcing the new series title earlier this year, Amazon released a video in which molten metals ran like fiery rivers through wooden ravines to craft out silver letters to spell out its name.

The first series was filmed in New Zealand - like Peter Jackson's films - but production is moving to the UK for the second season.

What is Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power about?

The Rings of Power focuses on the major events of Tolkien's "Second Age" of Middle Earth, when the famous rings were forged.

It is set thousands of years before The Hobbit and its sequels, The Lord of the Rings.

The story is set in Tolkien's universe but is not written by him.

When will the Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power be released and how can I watch it?

Amazon says The Lord Of The Rings: The Rings Of Power will premiere on Amazon Prime Video on Friday September 2. New episodes will be released every week.
