Hi. It's Monday, May 9 and you're reading The Loop, a quick wrap-up of today's news.
Let's start here
Three-year-old Nevaeh Austin, who was left on a bus for six hours at a Queensland childcare centre last week, has been discharged from hospital.
She was flown in a critical condition to the Queensland Children's Hospital in Brisbane, but today was discharged and flew home with her parents.
Police and the Department of Education are investigating the incident — no charges have been laid at this stage.
What else is going on
- Family, friends and teammates have paid tribute to two men killed in a horrific crash near Brisbane yesterday. Vaea Taavale Anthony Cooper died at the scene, and multiple others were injured. Mustangs Brothers Rugby League Football Club described 22-year-old Vaea as "a brother, a friend and an all-round great human".
- Former Sydney school teacher Chris Dawson asked someone with criminal connections if they knew anyone who could "get rid of his wife", a court has heard. The 72-year-old is accused of murdering his wife Lynette Dawson in 1982 and disposing of her body at an unknown location
What Australia has been searching for online
- U2. The Irish band's Bono and The Edge have performed a surprise "freedom" concert in a Ukrainian metro station. In a tweet, the bandmates said they were invited to perform as a "show of solidarity" with Ukrainians — "and so that's what we've come to do".
- Early voting. Today was the first day Australians can officially cast their vote in the 2022 federal election. A few hundred early voting centres have now opened around the country, so if you want to skip the queue on May 21, find your closest one here.
One more thing
Eurovision's back, baby.
This year's artists have walked the turquoise carpet for the competition's opening ceremony in Italy, and in classic Eurovision fashion, the looks were absolutely wild.
Obsessed? Us too. Check out more from the turquoise carpet here.
