The Loop: Sri Lanka's navy catches asylum seekers, Socceroos through to World Cup, and Kevin Spacey goes to court

Hi there, it's Tuesday, June 14. Here's what you need to get going today.

One thing to know right now

People smugglers have been accused of luring desperate Sri Lankans onto boats to seek asylum, promising a different Australian government will let them in.

Here's the lowdown:

  • More than 300 Sri Lankans have tried to get to Australia in the last few weeks, as warnings emerge that the country's economic crisis is on the verge of a humanitarian emergency
  • The ABC's South Asia correspondent Avani Dias has spoken to several people on those boats who were told they'd be allowed into Australia under the new Labor Government.
  • But Labor's asylum seeker policy does not support boat arrivals
  • Vision obtained by the ABC shows fishing trawlers packed with asylum seekers in choppy waters being caught by the Sri Lankan navy:

One thing you’ll be hearing about today: The Socceroos have done it!

Everyone breathing?

Their must-win World Cup qualifier against Peru ended in a very tense shootout this morning, winning 5-4 on penalties. Here's what happened:

  • The Aussies had the momentum through the match but, after 120 scoreless minutes, it was penalty time
  • Peru scored first, after Martin Boyle missed the opening spot kick. It went to sudden death, with Peru also missing a shot
  • Reserve goalkeeper Andrew Redmayne was the hero for Australia, producing this stunning save to send the Socceroos through to the World Cup finals:
  • And coach Graham Arnold said he's already asked the PM to make today a holiday:

News while you snoozed

Let's get you up to speed.

  • Those in Queensland and NSW were warned about power outages yesterday — but they didn't happen overnight. Why? The Australian Energy Market Operator used its powers to direct electricity generators to avoid shortfalls. And it's all come about after an energy price cap of $300 was given to energy providers.

Founder and editor of Renew Economy, Giles Parkinson, says that energy providers have let their customers down:

  • The NSW government is promising to drive down childcare costs, spending $5 billion on the sector over the next 10 years. Under the plan, the state government will give subsidies to private childcare providers, with the intention of lowering fees
  • British police have charged actor Kevin Spacey over historical sexual assault allegations, after prosecutors authorised the charges last month. The Oscar-winner will be in court this week
  • And rising expectations that the US Federal Reserve will raise interest rates by more than previously forecast has unsettled investors, sending the S&P 500 into a bear market (down 3.9 per cent) and intensifying fears over the economic outlook

The news Australia is searching for

  • Amber Heard: The actor's first post-verdict interview has aired on US TV, saying she doesn't "blame" the jury for awarding Johnny Depp more than $10 million in a libel trial, adding: "You still couldn’t look me in the eye and tell me that you think on social media there’s been a fair representation."

That's it for now

We'll be back later on with more.
