The Loop: New agenda for parliament, NRL gay pride jersey controversy, and emotional tributes for Paul Sorvino

Hi there, it's Tuesday, July 26. Here's what you need to get going today.

One thing to know right now: The pollies are back

New government, new faces: Those "first day at school" vibes are strong in Canberra, where the 47th parliament is sitting for the first time today. Here's what's on the agenda:

  • Week one will see 18 pieces of legislation from the new Labor government introduced
  • On the list? Recommendations from the aged care royal commission, legislating 10 days of paid leave for people experiencing domestic and family violence, and the new government's emissions reduction targets
  • That last one will cause the most fireworks.  The Greens and some independents are arguing the targets are too weak, so Labor may face roadblocks in the Senate
Yep, those corridors are busy again. (ABC News: Matt Roberts)

One thing you'll hear about today: Manly players consider boycott

We're expecting to hear from club officials at a press conference later today. Here's what's happened:

  • Several players from Sydney rugby league club the Manly Sea Eagles are considering boycotting a match this week over their club's decision to wear a gay pride jersey

  • Players are reportedly upset at not being consulted and are refusing to wear it on cultural and religious grounds
  • Kieran Foran, Reuben Garrick and Sean Keppie were among those to help launch the strip but other players say they learned about the move on social media on Sunday night
  • Officials met with players last night
  • Club great Ian Roberts, who in 1995 became the first rugby league player to come out as openly gay, told The Daily Telegraph he was disappointed by the players not willing to wear the jersey:

  • Four democracy activists have been executed by Myanmar's ruling military. UN secretary-general Antonio Guterres has strongly condemned it and called for the release of other prisoners including Aung San Suu Kyi

The news Australia is searching for

  • David Warner: The British actor has died, aged 80. He worked across film, TV and the stage, but is most known for  his work in Titanic, Tron and the Star Trek franchise
  • UK Eurovision: The UK has been named as the official host of the 2023 song contest after it was decided that Ukraine (which won the 2022 edition) was too dangerous to hold the contest. And just in case you want to recap that glory, we've got some highlights:
Eurovision is a spectacle of songs and costumes. Ukraine's winning entry is right at the end.
  • Adele: The singer's Vegas residency is back on. She thanked fans for their "patience" after she cancelled her shows earlier this year

One more thing: Goodfellas star dies

Paul Sorvino was gangster Paulie Cicero in the classic mob movie, was one of the 1990s Law & Order stars, and he worked in film and TV for more than 50 years.

He died at 83, with his Oscar-winning actor daughter Mira Sorvino leading the tributes:

But this video of his reaction to his daughter's Oscars win is priceless:

That's it for now

We'll be back later on with more.
