Hi there, it's Wednesday, July 6. Here's what you need to get going today.
One thing to know right now: Nick Kyrgios to face ACT court
Here's the lowdown:
- It's understood the Australian tennis player will face a charge of common assault after a domestic incident in December last year
- His appearance in the ACT magistrates court will be on August 2 and the offence carries a maximum of two years' jail
- It comes as Kyrgios prepares for his quarter-final at Wimbledon tonight, after a controversial start to the tournament
- He has been reprimanded twice for his on-court behaviour and fined more than $20,000 at the grass-court grand slam
One thing you’ll be hearing about today: A bad day for Boris Johnson
The British PM is fighting for his political survival after his Treasurer and Health Secretary quit. Here's how it went down:
- Chancellor of the Exchequer (aka the Treasurer) Rishi Sunak and Health Secretary Sajid Javid both quit the ministry within minutes of each other
- Both had previously shown public support for Mr Johnson during months of scandal over his government's conduct
- And they both took aim at Mr Johnson's ability to run a government that adhered to standards
- Mr Sunak, who had reportedly clashed with the Prime Minister in private about spending, said:
News while you snoozed
Let's get you up to speed.
- More than 350,000 Ukrainians have been urged to flee as Russia escalates its offensive. The governor of Donetsk, the last remaining eastern province partly under Ukraine's control, said it was needed — and it's one of the biggest single calls for an evacuation since the war began
- Rudy Giuliani and US Senator Lindsey Graham could be forced to testify before a special grand jury in Georgia over Donald Trump's alleged "multi-state, coordinated plan" to influence the 2020 US election
- And US police said the gunman who attacked an Independence Day parade in Chicago and killed seven people evaded initial capture by dressing as a woman and blending in with the fleeing crowd
The news Australia is searching for
- Hunter flood: Heavy rain in NSW has moved north overnight, and residents along the Hunter River at places around Singleton (including Combo, Glenridding, Dunolly, Whittingham, and Scotts Flat) have been told to evacuate. Keep up with the latest warnings on ABC Emergency's page
One more thing: How a bathroom break saved Djokovic
Novak Djokovic has won through to the Wimbledon semi-finals — but he had his work cut out for him against Italian Jannik Sinner.
The Serbian tennis player came back from two sets down and said he turned the match around during a visit to the bathroom.
And for the record, he won 5-7, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-2.
That's it for now
We'll be back later on with more.
