The Liverpool man who won the Victoria Cross twice

An army medic who was the only person to be awarded the Victoria Cross twice during WWI is still remembered in the city.

Captain Noel Chavasse was first honoured with a VC for his bravery at the Battle of the Somme where he tended to wounded soldiers while still under fire, saving the lives of at least 20 men. He was honoured a second time at Passchendaele, in August 2017.

On August 2, 1917 he was wounded by shell fire but continued to care for injured comrades. He was taken to a casualty clearing station and died two days later.
