The ladies who gave away food weighing 96 stone. Take a bow girls!

Weight for it – instead of eating food a group of fit Paisley ladies have given it away.

Rather than add up the cost of the grub they donated, they put it on the scales.

And it tipped in at 96 stone of food which was donated to Renfrewshire Foodbank yesterday.

The ladies from Curves Paisley were behind the collection.

The gym in Silk Street looked more like a supermarket as the food piled in.

Assistant manager Jill Barrett revealed everybody at the 341-member ladies gym was “incredibly generous”.

Jill said: “Every March we run our local food drive to help those in our local communities who are less fortunate, especially during such a challenging time this year.

“Our current members have been incredibly generous.

Supportive of their community: Jill Barrett, Siobhan Kavanagh and Emma Ion (Andrew Neil)

“As well as this we offered new members the opportunity to join in the month of March for no service fee.

“All they had to do was bring along a bag of non-perishable food items to the food drive.

“We have actually managed to collect 96 stone of food and toiletries.”

Renfrewshire Foodbank is run from Porterfield Road in Renfrew and is part of a network supported by The Trussell Trust.

The trust say more people are being driven towards food banks and struggle to afford to run cookers.

A spokesman said: “The energy price rise is extremely concerning, especially for people who are struggling to afford the essentials.

“People are already making impossible decisions between heating and eating, and are being forced towards food banks. This isn’t right. No charity can replace the dignity of being able to afford essentials, such as food.

“Action to strengthen our social security system and bring benefits in line with the true cost of living needs to happen.”

Curves is a female-only environment where members take part in training sessions, healthy eating and motivational techniques.

Meanwhile, Renfrewshire Foodbank has a team entered into the Kiltwalk later this month. Manager Crystal Clayton hopes to raise £1,000 from the walk in Glasgow on April 24.
