At 15, Enos Mills had already built himself a small cabin near Colorado’s Longs Peak. It was an unlikely beginning for someone who would later become closely associated with the creation of Rocky Mountain National Park. Mills had arrived in Colorado as a sick teenager from Kansas, after doctors warned his parents that he might not live long. Life in the mountains brought a change. He became a guide, writer and keen observer of the wilderness, spending years travelling its trails. But as visitors, miners and loggers put increasing pressure on the landscape, Mills began working towards a different goal: protecting the mountains for the future.
