Scotland has become a Hollywood hotspot in recent years, with a number of blockbusters being filmed around the country.
You may already be aware that big-budget movies such as Avengers: Infinity War and Fast & Furious 9 shot scenes in Edinburgh, while period drama Outlander has filmed all around Scotland—from tiny towns to dramatic lochs.
One film you may not know was shot in Scotland is Detective Pikachu, a 2019 film based on the Pokémon franchise—the highest-grossing franchise of all time. The film stars Ryan Reynolds as the titular Detective Pikachu, as he attempts to solve the mysterious disappearance of an insurance agent's father.
The movie is set in the fictional Pokémon universe, with much of the story set in Ryme City—conceived as a mix of London, New York, and Tokyo. Many of the city scenes were filmed in London's financial district to capture the bustling nature of the imaginary city.
However, the film also sees the characters venture out of Ryme City into the countryside. It is during these scenes that Scotland was used as a filming location.
In particular, Glen Nevis and the River Affric near Cannich in the Scottish Highlands were used as a backdrop. Helicopter and drones were utilised to capture stunning sweeping shots of the magnificent scenery.
Additionally, footage was also shot in Glen Nevis and the surrounding area, as well as the spooky Devil's Pulpit near Loch Lomond. Another scene was filmed on the Bridge of Orchy in Argyll.
Around the time of the film's release, Leader of Highland Council Margaret Davidson commented: "The film is showing Glen Affric, which is one the most impressive and wild parts of Scotland, if not the most impressive.
"It is great to see it on screen and we welcome the opportunity for visitors to come."
