The IRS Is Mailing a New Retirement Notice — Don’t Assume It’s Junk Mail

Woman Looking At Mail
A new IRS retirement notice is alerting some taxpayers to the Saver’s Match beginning in 2027. Eligible savers could receive up to $1,000 per person in federal matching money for qualifying retirement contributions. (Pexels).

A thin envelope from the IRS is rarely something people look forward to opening, but a new mailing arriving in taxpayers’ mailboxes is different from the usual tax bill or warning. The IRS retirement notice, known as CP321J, is alerting certain Americans that they may qualify for a new federal retirement-savings benefit beginning in 2027.

According to Investopedia, notices are going to taxpayers who claimed the Saver’s Credit on their 2025 returns or whose 2025 income fell within the potential eligibility range. The letter does not mean you owe money, and recipients generally do not need to take immediate action. Still, throwing it away without understanding the coming changes could mean overlooking a retirement benefit worth as much as $1,000 per person annually.
