I empathise with Colm (AKA Colin) Russell (Letters, 2 March). However, I can also confirm that name-mangling works in reverse between Britain and Ireland. After 30-plus years of visiting my family and friends in Ireland, my English husband, Colin, has resigned himself to being called “Colm” whenever he meets someone new.
