The important checks you need to make before donating items in plastic charity bags

Donating your unwanted clothes, household items and knick-knacks to charity is a selfless and generous thing to do and can be a great help to local, national and international charities and causes. While most charity collections help support the charity and the work they do, unfortunately some collections never make it to charity and funds or donations are pocketed by sneaky individuals.

Sadly, there are always going to be people who prey on others' generosity for charity, for example by collecting funds in the name of a charity they don't actually work for, or by collecting items in the name of a charity that doesn't actually exist.

Every week, thousands of us across Wales receive little folded plastic charity bags through our letterboxes. Typically, there's a printed message on the bags which ask for the householder to fill the bags with items they no longer need or want, which can be sold on to raise funds for a specific charity. While thousands of pounds are raised every year by auctioning off and selling items donated to charities in this way, sometimes the items don't get passed on to a charity at all.
