The idyllic East Lothian seaside town named one of best places to retire in UK

Just under an hour's drive from Edinburgh lies a beautiful seaside town that has just been named one of the best places in the UK to retire.

Lying on Scotland's gorgeous 'golf coast', North Berwick is already a popular summer holiday and staycation destination and was recently named the UK's most relaxing place to visit.

However, the town has just been given another accolade after it was also deemed one of the best places to retire, according to research by Lottie. A recent list by the Sunday Times described it as one of the best areas for activities and hobbies for retirees, according to the Daily Record.

With the views from the seaside town being listed as some of the "most spectacular" in southern Scotland, it was commended for offering clubs that accommodate all sorts of hobbies, including walking, cycling, yoga and ceilidh dancing.

And of course, if you fancy getting the clubs out, there are plenty of incredible courses on offer in the area, including the North Berwick Golf Club, the 13th oldest golf club in the world.

The Times Travel team wrote: "The lively, independent high street has plenty going on and the town is now younger, livelier and has something for all generations.

"The landscape is a delight, and easily accessible, though for the seriously active, sunrise from the top of North Berwick Law is one of the most spectacular sights in southern Scotland."

However, if you wanted to move to North Berwick you would need some serious money behind you. The town's average house price sits at £305,000.

The Times did find that smaller retirement flats on the market are a little cheaper, with one in the town centre coming in at £175,000.

Last week, the nearby village of Haddington was named the "ultimate Scottish staycation spot" by the Lottie, a care home search service. Another stunning location to visit, it is only a 20-minute drive from North Berwick.
