MedStar Washington Hospital Center closed one of its two postpartum units on Sunday, cutting 11 beds from the hospital that delivers about a third of all babies born in the District and leaving 18.
The closure of Unit 5F had been scheduled since May, when the hospital notified the nurses' union. Eight nursing positions were affected. The hospital says the nurses were reassigned rather than laid off.
