The Gaza Strip has long been a powder keg – and it exploded after Hamas fighters stormed Israel on 7 October 2023.
The invasion, in which about 1200 Israelis were killed and hundreds taken hostage, sparked a crushing military operation in the enclave, which has only last month reached an uneasy ceasefire. Palestinian health authorities say the military campaign has killed more than 45,600 people.
