If you’re on the hunt for a streamlined way to travel internationally while only packing a toothbrush, an iPad, a single white T-shirt made of technical fabric and a lukewarm sachet of Huel, then keep scrolling. I simply couldn’t care less.
Packing for travel shouldn’t be a grim logistical exercise in minimising the milligrams of mass one must transport. It should be a prelude to an adventure – and an adventure in itself!
(Suit)case in point, I have recently embarked on a journey to the Edinburgh fringe, where – after many years as a double-act comedian – I am performing my first ever solo theatre show. Thus, I have packed what I deem the essentials – which is to say, for every possible eventuality.
Dressing up. Dressing down. A dressing gown (and pyjamas and slippers, naturally). Gymwear, swimwear. Day outfits, night outfits, show outfits. A series of mysterious items for vocal rest (Dr Nelson’s legendary inhaler). Books! More books! Face masks (why not?).
I’ve no interest in dull consumerism – but there is a joy in choice; a power in seeing what the universe has to hurl at you that day, and reaching into your luggage to meet the moment.
As an extension of my extravagant travel philosophy, my very suitcase is preposterous. Some years ago, at a sample sale, I acquired a vast Globe-Trotter. It was for many years the most expensive item I owned, and I have never regretted a purchase less. It’s beautiful, practical and every scuff and torn sticker is transportive.
Via careful planning, numerous packing cubes and a straining-at-the-edges suit carrier, I loaded up my Globe-Trotter to the brim. I packed, exactly, everything I could possibly need.
And then I packed another full suitcase. Just in case.
