The Harry Potter show won't release a season a year, and everyone is united in saying that's a bad idea

Harry Potter.

HBO chief Casey Bloys has confirmed that releasing one season of the new Harry Potter show per year is not possible, and fans are not sure how to feel about it.

Whilst speaking to The Hollywood Reporter, Bloys was asked why the studio is able to release 15 episodes of The Pitt every year, when other shows have two-year-plus gaps. Bloys responded, "For some of the bigger shows like Harry Potter or House of the Dragon, or The Last of Us, huge world-building shows, it would be nice to have those on an annual basis. But from a production point of view, it’s just not possible."

Fans are not too keen on the prospect. Wizarding World Direct posted the quote on Twitter, and one fan replied, "So they want to drag this out for the next 15+ years and waste everyone's time telling the same story that's already been told twice?" Another added, "I can't believe HBO, the same network that released the first 7 seasons of Game of Thrones annually, can't do that again with Harry Potter."

Many fans are concerned that the show will meet the same fate as Stranger Things. The Netflix show released five seasons across ten years, but in doing so, saw many of the stars age out of their characters. Because the kids playing Harry, Ron, and Hermione in the show are still very young, the aging will surely be more noticeable.

The Harry Potter show was pitched as seven seasons, each following one of the seven books. Releasing one season per year would be ideal in terms of time jumps within the story, as each book focuses on Harry's respective school years at Hogwarts. However, if each season takes two years to hit the screen, we could be waiting well over a decade for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows to be brought to life, again.

Back in 2023, HBO said that the series would run for ten years, which is the same amount of time it took for the eight Harry Potter movies to hit the screen. However, if Bloys is comparing the release of the Harry Potter series to the likes of House of the Dragon and The Last of Us, we might be spending many years to come in the Wizarding World this time around.

It is important to note that Bloys says the choice not to release annually is not because "everybody involved is just taking their time and sitting around." The HBO head added, "These shows are complicated to do," and pointed out that The Pitt releases yearly as "there are no dragons that need to be rendered, or zombies and things like that."

The Harry Potter TV show arrives in 2027. In the meantime, keep up to date with our guide to all the most exciting upcoming TV shows.

The upcoming HBO Harry Potter series, on which J.K. Rowling is an executive producer, has been the subject of criticism and debate due to the author’s public stance on gender identity, which continues to challenge the inclusivity at the heart of the Harry Potter community. It was a similar situation with the Hogwarts Legacy launch, and you can read more about the Hogwarts Legacy controversy in our explainer.
