Hulu has released the final extended trailer for the highly-anticipated fifth season of the TV drama which will be released next month.
The trailer teases the explosive aftermath of former handmaid June's coordinated murder of Commander Fred Waterford at the end of the fourth season.
The frightening villain, played by Joseph Fiennes, met his demise when June Osborne and a group of her fellow handmaids chased him in the woods and beat him to death.
The fourth season of the show, which is based on Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name, ended with June returning home with blood on her face as she prepared to hand herself over to the authorities for the killing.
The trailer – just over two minutes long – begins with a shot of June thinking back on Commander Waterford as she justifies why he had to die.
She says: “He was a monster. The founding father of Gilead. He took away our country. He had to pay for what he did. I killed him and I loved it so much.”
June is then seen sitting with her partner Luke as she ominously tells him: “I killed him, and I loved it so much.”
A new character, a commander, meanwhile, says: “June Osborne is a cancer. We have to cut her out.”
Set in a dystopian future that sees women as state property, June was the concubine of Commander Waterford and his wife Serena, and this season will see her face off Serena after his death.
In the trailer, June says she wants Serena to know that she's responsible for Waterford's death.
The Handmaid’s Tale fans took to Twitter to react to the extended trailer, with one writing: “The more this show progresses, the more intense it gets! This show will hit differently now in today's environment!”
A second added: “It's gonna be interesting and heart wrenching to see June go further with her revenge. I want to see her revenge and to see Gillead burn but I'm worried many people who are close to June are gonna get killed.”
“Serena vs June. This is gonna be epic, tragic and gut-wrenching,” wrote a third, while a fourth added: “This honestly looks like the most intense season yet! I’m so excited!”
“I feel like writers are trying to describe June in this: 'He who fights monsters should see to it that he himself does not become a monster.' But honestly, she could burn a city and still be a lesser evil than Fred and Serena,” a fifth wrote.
The fifth season of The Handmaid’s Tale is set to premiere on Hulu on September 14, with new episodes streaming on Wednesdays.
