The Greggs sausage roll capital of Greater Manchester has been revealed - and it's not in the city centre

It sometimes feels like you can’t walk even five minutes through Manchester city centre without coming across at least one Greggs on your travels.

The bakery chain is a big hit with most people looking for a cheap and easy treat, whether it’s for their doughnuts, sandwiches, cakes or famed pasties. In fact, there are now a whopping 2,199 Greggs dotted all across the UK.

But, there’s one thing in particular that separates Greggs from the rest: their sausage rolls. Perfectly-seasoned sausage meat wrapped tightly around a crisp puff pastry is the chef’s kiss when you’re hungover, want a quick snack, or just want to feed the kids. The vegan version is pretty good too.

Greggs says each of its stores produce a daily average of 1,500 sausage rolls or about 545,000 in a year. That’s just slightly less than the population of Manchester (around 553,230 people) and would weigh more than four and a half double-decker buses full of the sausage stuff. And that’s just one shop in Stockport.

A total of 101 Greggs outlets are spread across Greater Manchester and there are more outlets in the city of Manchester than anywhere else in our area with 29, but when it comes to population, that's not enough to trump one borough.

Here in Greater Manchester, Trafford is officially the sausage roll capital of our city-region. There are only (!!) 13 Greggs outlets in the borough, but when compared to the population that adds up to 30 sausage rolls per person, or enough to allow everyone in Trafford to enjoy at least one savoury snack every fortnight. Around seven million sausage rolls are produced each year in Trafford alone.

You can see what the Greggs sausage roll rate is where you live using our interactive map below:

Manchester has the next highest rate of Greggs sausage rolls at 29 - or 16 million a year, if you fancy, followed by Bury (23), Rochdale (19), and Stockport (17).

Overall, the Greggs sausage roll capital of the UK has to be in Glasgow - where there are 54 stores, more than anywhere else. The stores in the Scottish city alone produce around 29.4m sausage rolls a year, roughly working out at around 46 sausage rolls a year per person there.

Birmingham, with 49, and Leeds (43) round-up the top three of the most Greggs per city. Whilst it may seem like there is a Gregg’s wherever you look here in Greater Manchester, we’ve - surprisingly - only got 101 outlets.

Anyone else suddenly have a craving for sausage rolls now?
