The good and bad from the 49ers’ blowout win over the Eagles

In a game billed as a heavyweight title fight, the San Francisco 49ers landed haymaker after haymaker with a mix of smooth jabs and different combinations en route to a highlight-reel knockout over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday afternoon.

Behind four touchdown tosses from Brock Purdy and a hat trick of scores from Deebo Samuel, the 49ers silenced a rowdy Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia with a 42-19 blowout over the Eagles in a highly-anticipated rematch of the NFC Championship game.

With the game wrapped up, here’s a look at all the good and some of the bad from the 49ers dominant 42-19 win on the road against the Eagles in Week 13.

Good - Deebo Samuel

There’s something about Deebo Samuel in a big game. After a lot of chatter and back and forth with the Eagles since the 49ers loss in last year’s NFC Championship, Samuel backed all the talk up in a big way.

Samuel shredded the Eagles defense on his own, taking two separate passes over the middle from Purdy and weaving through the Philadelphia defense while breaking tackle after tackle on his way to the end zone.

Samuel racked up 116 yards on four receptions with two touchdowns to go along with three carries for 22 yards and a touchdown on the ground for a hat trick.

Good - Brock Purdy

Another game, another solid performance from Brock Purdy.

While the 49ers sputtered out of the gate in the first quarter, Purdy didn’t panic and struck when the Eagles defense started to open up. Despite a rowdy atmosphere in a high pressure situation, Purdy never forced the ball and let the game come to him. Purdy spread the ball around like a point guard on Sunday and let his playmakers do the heavy lifting.

Purdy dished out touchdowns to three different receivers on his way to four touchdown passes against the Eagles. Purdy completed 19 balls on 27 attempts for 314 yards through the air. Purdy finished with a 148.8 rating against the Eagles.

Bad - Dre Greenlaw

Bill Streicher-USA TODAY Sports

Dre Greenlaw found himself at the center of one of the biggest moments of the game on Sunday.

After Jalen Hurts completed a pass to DeVonta Smith down the sideline, Greenlaw arrived and slammed the Eagles wide receiver to the ground.  As flags begun to to fly, the Philadelphia sideline came to the defense of Smith, including a member of their security staff. Greenlaw and Eagles security chief Dom Disandro exchanged words before Green made contact with DiSandro.

Following the exchange, Green and Disandro were ejected from the game.

While the incident was a good look for Greenlaw that resulted in the 49ers losing one of their starting linebackers for the remainder of the game, it’s hard to explain how a member of the security staff was in the position to get involved with a player in the game. A very bizarre situation, but still, Greenlaw needs to keep his cool so he can stay on the field where he’s incredibly valuable.

Nearly every member of the 49ers passing game got involved on Sunday. With his 19 completions for 314 yards, Purdy distributed the ball all over the yard against the Eagles.

Samuel, George Kittle, Jauan Jennings, Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey all had three or more catches for 40 or more yards against the Eagles on Sunday.

Once Purdy found the 49ers’ pass catchers, they handled business. Multiples members of the pass game came up with big yards after the catch. Along with Samuel, Jauan Jennings broke tackles on his way to the end zone.

Good: Javon Kinlaw

For the first time since his rookie season in 2020, Javon Kinlaw recorded a sack.

Sunday marked one of the more productive games of Kinlaw’s young career. The former first-round pick notched two sacks and four tackles on Sunday. Kinlaw’s two sacks against the Eagles helped double his sack total for his career.

While Nick Bosa was battling Lane Johnson, Kinlaw was able to consistently get pressure through the interior of the Eagles offensive line. Kinlaw also helped slow down the Eagles’ high powered run game.

Good: 49ers' Run Defense

Eric Hartline-USA TODAY Sports

The Eagles’ run game on was non-existent on Sunday.

D’Andre Swift and Jalen Hurts were quiet on the ground throughout the contest. Swift posted only 13 yards on six carries against the 49ers, his lowest rushing total since Week 1 against the New England Patriots.

Hurts tacked on only 20 yards on the ground as the Eagles leading rusher on Sunday.

As a team, the Eagles rushed for only 46 total yards, their lowest rushing output since 2018. The 49ers have only recorded four games all season without eclipsing 100 yards rushing as a team. Prior to Sunday, 59 yards against the Commanders was their season low.

Good: Sam Darnold

When Sam Darnold enters the game in a blowout situation it usually means good things have happened.
