The Gate in Newcastle city centre remains closed for fourth day due to 'safety concerns'

The Gate Newcastle remained closed on Monday after the building was evacuated on Thursday evening due to 'safety concerns'.

On Friday evening the leisure complex announced that it would remain closed throughout the weekend, with the exception of bars The Hustle, The Lofts and The Mayfair, which are located on the outside of the complex, away from the main building. The rest of the building, including the car park, remained closed.

No updates have been issued on The Gate's website and social media channels as of 2pm on Monday. However, signs remain attached to the entrance of the building informing the public that The Gate is closed "until further notice" due to "unforeseen circumstances". The sign also said they were "working to restore business as usual" as people arrived at the building this morning to realise it was still shut.

Although The Gate has not indicated when the site will reopen, Cineworld, which occupies the top floors of the building has currently cancelled all screenings until Wednesday, May 11. Cineworld staff have also advised customers that the building will be closed until Wednesday "at the earliest".

In a response to a customer on Twitter who was enquiring about whether The Gate will be open on Wednesday for a screening of Doctor Strange 2, Cineworld replied: "Following the precautionary closure of The Gate, investigations will continue over the next few days and unfortunately, we'll be unable to reopen until they have been completed.

"At Present, we anticipate they will continue until Wednesday next week at the earliest. Please keep an eye on our website and social media channels for updates as soon as more information becomes available."

ChronicleLive contacted The Gate for an update on the situation on Monday morning and is awaiting a response. A number of businesses which occupy the building were also contacted about the situation, including Nando's and Wetherspoon, which both responded to say they are expecting an update later today.

A spokesperson for Pizza Hut Restaurant said: "Due to potential health and safety concerns at The Gate complex, we're temporarily closing our restaurant while investigations take place.

"The health and safety of our employees and customers is our utmost priority. We apologise for any inconvenience and plan to reopen once we're told it is safe to do so. In the meantime, we ask customers to enjoy a meal at our closest Hut at Gateshead Metro Centre or Gateshead Metro Retail Park to continue enjoying their favourite pizzas."
