The Full Monty cast reuniting almost 25 years after original film for new TV series

The Full Monty cast are back together filming a sequel series - 25 years after they charmed the world with their strip show shenanigans in the popular 1997 comedy film.

Filming began yesterday on an eight-part series - which will share its name with the original film - with the project said to be in production for streaming service Disney+.

Robert Carlyle, now 60, will reprise the role of Gary Schofield, who was the leader of the unemployed Sheffield steelworkers who form a striptease act in the original film.

Other cast members returning include Mark Addy, 58, as Dave Horsefall, Lesley Sharp, 61, as Jean Horsefall, Hugo Speer, 53, as Guy, as well as Paul Barber, 71, as Horse.

Viewers will also see the return of Steve Huison, 59, as Lomper, and Tom Wilkinson, 74, as Gerald Cooper. Wim Snape, who was 11 when he played Nathan in 1997, also returns, now aged 36.

The actor shared his enthusiasm over reprising the role in a post yesterday, writing: "Excited to announce that…The Full Monty. Original series is coming soon. Good to be back."

Simon Beaufoy, creator, writer, and executive producer, said: "We're chuffed to bits to get all the Monty men back together again, now with a chaotic entourage of children, grandchildren, pets and assorted hangers-on."

Lee Mason, of Disney, said: "Twenty-five years ago Simon introduced us to a group of funny, fearless and resilient unemployed working-class men from Sheffield and the world fell in love with them. We're delighted to reunite the original cast ... and we can't wait to introduce a host of exciting new faces."

Disney+ said the series would show the men "navigate the post-industrial city of Sheffield and society's crumbling healthcare, education and employment sectors."

And despite being a low-budget film made for around £2 million, The Full Monty won a BAFTA for Best Film and took in £154 million at the box office following its release.

The Full Monty (1997) - the original film - is available to stream on Disney+ in the UK.
