The full lowdown on who Wales will face at the World Cup, the dangermen and whether they can beat England

With qualification done and dusted, Wales can now turn their attention to their Group B opponents at the World Cup in Qatar later this year.

64 years of hurt have now been banished by Sunday's play-off win over Ukraine, and Rob Page's side can start thinking about their preparations for the tournament, with three big games ahead.

Wales kick off their campaign against the United States on November 21, before taking on Iran just four days later. They then finish the group stage with the small matter of a clash against arch rivals England on November 29.

Here's a quick lowdown on what Wales can expect.

USA

FIFA ranking 15

Best World Cup finish 3rd (1930)

Lowdown The USA are back after missing out on qualification for the finals in 2018.

The failure to qualify for Russia left a deep scar on the American game, which had previously made great strides in recent years. In fact, it was actually the first time they had failed to qualify for a tournament since 1986.

It feels like there's been something of a reset across the Atlantic, with former Crystal Palace defender Gregg Berhalter overseeing a revival that has resulted in the country quietly assembling a talented and exciting squad of young stars, many of whom are plying their trade for some of the biggest clubs in Europe.

There was once a time when, for a top European side, anything other than a handsome win over the Americans would be considered an embarrassment. But no one can afford to underestimate them nowadays, including Wales. The USA have lost just four of their last 30 games, although they did require goal difference to confirm their place in Qatar, which perhaps suggests they're not quite the finished product just yet.

Previous meetings Wales and the USA played out possibly one of the dullest friendlies to ever take place back in November 2020, in what was only the second meeting between the two teams.

The first clash took place in San Jose back 2003 as a Landon Donovan penalty and an Eddie Lewis strike handed the hosts a 2-0 win over Mark Hughes' Wales, who were reduced to ten men when Matt Jones was sent off.

Dangerman to Wales 19-year-old Giovanni Reyna has shone for Borussia Dortmund, while there are similarly high hopes for Juventus midfielder Weston McKennie and Lille winger Tim Weah, son of Liberian legend, George. But perhaps the most recognisable name is Chelsea's Christian Pulisic, who after a tricky start has started to settle into life in the Premier League. Nicknamed 'Captain America' by fans and colleagues, he's the youngest player to skipper the US in the modern era.

Iran

FIFA ranking 21

Best World Cup finish Group stage/first round (1978, 1998, 2006, 2014, 2018)

Lowdown Iran take on the rather unwanted role of potential whipping boys in this group, a status largely due to their historically poor record in this competition.

A famous win over the USA at France 98 is undoubtedly the highlight of what is otherwise a pretty dismal record. Their last appearance four years ago did at least bring them a victory over a Morocco, and 1978 saw them shock Scotland with a 1-1 draw in Argentina, but they have lost every other game they've played in this tournament.

There are already concerns that this campaign could also be a struggle, with Iran already seeing their preparations affected by disruption to their schedule this summer. They were due to play Canada on June 5, but that clash was cancelled, before games with Algeria and South Africa also fell by the wayside.

As things stand, Iran haven't played a competitive fixture since March, and don't yet seem to have anything lined up before heading to Qatar. It's a situation that has already concerned the local press, with the Tehran Times warning: "While the national teams around the world have started their preparation, Dragan Skocic’s team waste time and it could be irreversible damage to the team."

That said, they enjoyed a reasonably impressive qualifying campaign and are still the highest-ranked side from Asia in the competition.

Previous meetings Wales have only played Iran once before. A Phil Dwyer goal was enough to seal victory in a friendly clash in Tehran back in 1978.

Dangerman to Wales Captain Ehsan Hajsafi has 118 international caps to his name, and briefly played under John Toshack at Iranian side Tractor in 2018. But in terms of stardust, it's probably a toss-up between strikers Sardar Azmoun (40 goals in 62 international games) and Mehdi Taremi (27 goals in 57 games).

England

FIFA ranking 5th

Best World Cup finish Winners (1966)

Lowdown Let's be honest. England don't really require much introduction for many Wales fans. everyone knows about their players from the Premier League.

Gareth Southgate's side will be red-hot favourites to win Group B, with the Three Lions boasting plenty of strength in depth in a number of positions.

This will be the game that members of the Red Wall will either be relishing or utterly dreading, such is the emotional toll it will take. The old enemy have performed well on the world stage since being embarrassed by Iceland at Euro 2016, with Southgate guiding them to the semi-finals of the 2018 World Cup, as well as the Euro 2020 final.

Even the most ardent Welsh fan would have to concede that England will be expected to get the better of Rob Page's men in Qatar. But as Scotland showed at Wembley last summer, the odds don't always tell the full story. A brave performance from Steve Clarke's side earned a highly credible 0-0 draw that day, much to the delight of the travelling Tartan Army.

Wales will admittedly have to be at their best, but will surely need little extra motivation, and it's a game that will probably mean more to them than to those across the border. You never know.

Previous meetings Wales last played England behind closed doors at Wembley during the height of the coronavirus pandemic, with Southgate's side running out 3-0 winners over a largely experimental Welsh line-up.

Many will remember the meeting at Euro 2016, as Daniel Sturridge netted a late winner to hand the Three Lions a dramatic victory to break Welsh hearts.

Indeed, and without meaning to put too much of a downer on it, Wales have a pretty desperate record against their neighbours, winning just 14 of the 103 meetings between the two teams, with the last victory coming in 1984.

Dangerman to Wales Many will point to the likes of Jack Grealish, Trent Alexander-Arnold or Raheem Sterling, but Harry Kane remains England's talisman up front, having netted 50 goals for his country in 71 games.
