Stockport is set to celebrate the Queen’s platinum jubilee in style with street parties being held across the borough. To date, patriotic residents have lodged nearly 90 applications for road-closure street parties with the council. Knees ups are taking place everywhere from the Heatons, Bramhall and Cheadle to Romiley, Offerton and High Lane.
The festivities, in honour of Queen Elizabeth II’s 70 years on the throne, will take place from Thursday June 2 through to Sunday, June 5. It’s not just at street parties where the jubilee celebrations go with a swing, however. With less than two weeks to go until celebrations erupt across the country, Stockport has plenty of events lined up to mark the milestone anniversary.

Stockport’s Secret Party
Underbanks, Stockport town centre, June 4
Stockport’s Secret Party will feature live music from The Tall Faces Band as well as local duo Blank Cheque, and DJ sets from DJ Clint Boon and SK1 Records. The music will range from the 1950s, the decade of the Queen's coronation, to the present day.
There will be lots of activities for families including a jewellery making workshop to celebrate the history of Winters Jewellers, an opportunity to paint a family portrait to celebrate local history through family, and a comic book workshop with a local comic book artist.
In traditional street party fashion, there will be long benches to sit at decked with tablecloths and multicoloured bunting. People will also be able to get creative and make their own bunting to take to the party at Stockport Museum.
Guests at the party will be encouraged to purchase takeaway food and drink from local businesses and outdoor bars.
There will be more live, family-focused entertainment in Stockport Market where partygoers can browse the stalls and indulge in their pick of food and drink.
To encourage residents to come down and enjoy the fun, all on street parking and parking in all council-owned car parks will be free throughout the four-day weekend, from Thursday to Sunday.
Beacon lighting
As part of the national beacon lighting programme, more than 1500 beacons will be lit at the same time across the UK and overseas territories – and Stockport is going to be one of them.
The council says it will confirm the location and further information for this event shortly.
Celebrations at the town hall
The Town Hall will be lit up in purple to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee. The council will also be flying the official Jubilee flag above the town hall for the duration of the weekend.
A Jubilee Trail at Stockport Museums
Stockport museums will be hosting a Jubilee trail throughout the week leading up to The Queen’s Jubilee weekend. Residents can come along, discover Stockport’s rich local history, and go on a journey through the history of the Queen’s reign. More details will be announced over the coming days.
