An Ayr-born 95-year-old self-taught artist has been granted a poignant wish by a Scots shopping centre - for people to see his work before he dies.
The work of Thomas McGoran, born in Ayr in 1927, is on display at The Forge Shopping Centre, in Glasgow, in a pop-up gallery which is raising money for children’s charity, With Kids.
Thomas’ colourful work is all based on growing up in Glasgow in the 1930s, bringing to life everyday scenes like getting groceries and collecting coal to heap on the fire.
Entry to the gallery, which runs until February 26, is free but donations are welcome, all of which will go to With Kids charity.
Thomas himself will be there each day from 10am-5pm to talk to viewers about his inspiration behind each painting.
He said: “Come and see the beautiful city of Glasgow through my eyes growing up.
“The paintings are free to view, and none are for sale. My only wish is for people to see my art before I die.”
Thomas’ story has humble beginnings, starting out as a cinema projectionist before serving in the Royal Air Force.
In 1988 he retired from a long and varied career, and accepted a box of oil paints as a gift from his wife, Jenny.
With no formal training, Thomas taught himself how to use the materials by way of trial and error.
Now, his skills are on display for hundreds to view, as he takes art fans on a trip down memory lane of life and leisure in the 1930s.
Jade Wilkie, marketing manager at The Forge, said: “We didn’t hesitate to give Thomas a spot in the centre to showcase his work.
“His art is beautiful, and he’s such a kind, sweet gentleman. He deserves to have his paintings admired by thousands, which is why we encourage people to stop by and view them whenever they get a spare five minutes.
“The community is everything to us and this little project ticks so many boxes. Not only are we granting a local artist a very meaningful wish, but together we’re also raising vital funds for a children’s charity.”
