The FDA has approved mFlusiva, the first influenza vaccine built on mRNA technology to reach the US market, for adults 50 and older. The two age groups covered by that approval were cleared on different terms, and the distinction matters for anyone deciding what to do this fall.
For adults 50 to 64, the vaccine received standard approval based on efficacy. For adults 65 and older, the FDA granted accelerated approval based on antibody response, contingent on Moderna completing a confirmatory postmarketing trial that will run across two flu seasons.
