After winning a historic state election in Saxony-Anhalt, the Alternative für Deutschland (AfD) stands on the brink of becoming the first far-right party to gain power in Germany since World War Two.
The AfD won 44 per cent of the vote in what chancellor Friedrich Merz called a “seismic” defeat by a party classified by German intelligence as a right-wing extremist organisation.
