It's easy to forget sometimes while living in Glasgow that we are surrounded by some of Scotland's most breathtaking scenery and with the convenience of city living we sometimes forget to get out and explore our surroundings more.
One section of the country, which is criminally undervalued by Glaswegians is the southwest, the vast area filled with beautiful forests and nature trails which is easily accessible by car.
And with the team at Go Outdoors having analysed yearly visits, Tripadvisor reviews, Instagram hashtags, Tiktok views and Google search volume for more than 50 of the most visited free attractions in the UK to reveal the UK’s top cost-effective activities for 2023.
It's no surprise that Scotland dominates the top 10 and one site in particular, which is within reach of Glasgow and well worth travelling to, and is found in the southwest in Dumfries and Galloway.

A stunning waterfall, and one of Scotland's most spectacular sights, the Grey Mare's Tail is one of the tallest falls in the country and drops 60m down into the Moffat Water Valley.
Taking its name from the way the water froths and turns white as it drops down the cliff in a long sinuous line. The falls offer are a truly wonderful view that reminds you of the power of nature.
Speaking of nature the area around the falls is packed with wildlife with both ospreys and peregrine falcons actively hunting nearby.
