The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel could be the title of Bethesda's next RPG according to a solid fan theory that dates back to a Starfield teaser

Todd Howard.

Earlier this week, Xbox CEO Asha Sharma experienced a "live playthrough" of The Elder Scrolls 6, and offered some exuberant praise for it, alongside with an extra little teaser: eight asterisks. These eight asterisks, apparently, represent the game's subtitle, and they're lending credence to a longstanding theory that the title of the upcoming RPG will be The Elder Scrolls 6: Sentinel. It seems Bethesda may have even been planning this reveal since Starfield.

Both Asha's tweet and a follow-up message from Bethesda's own account were quite conspicuous in repeating "********," so it seems clear the devs expect us to be speculating on an eight-letter subtitle for The Elder Scrolls 6.

"Sentinel" instantly became a frontrunner among the guesses, since the name has history in Elder Scrolls lore. The kingdom of Sentinel – and the capital city of the same name – is a prominent location in Hammerfell, which has long been rumored as the RPG's location. That alone makes it a pretty compelling guess, to the point where even former Bethesda dev Michael Kirkbride had co-signed it, but there's more fuel for this fire.

When you create your character in Starfield, there's an employee number listed at the bottom of the screen: 190514-2009140512. You can split that number into two-digit components, as in 19, 05, 14, 20, 09, 14, 05, and 12. Count out each number to a corresponding letter in the alphabet and, well, you can probably guess where this is going. You'll get S, E, N, T, I, N, E, and L.

The Elder Scrolls 6 and Starfield were both announced at the same time, and certainly by the time Starfield was actually released in 2023, it's possible Bethesda had already decided on the next game's subtitle.

In any case, it's safe to say that the Elder Scrolls community has been taken by Sentinel fever at this point. The whole Elder Scrolls 6 subreddit has been overtaken by Sentinel fever, especially after the apparent Starfield teaser was pointed out. I'm on board with the sentiment the folks behind the UESP Wiki are tweeting: "I am starting to believe."

The Elder Scrolls 6 demo had a surprise guest at Bethesda HQ: a giant inflatable rat set up by protesting employees to watch Xbox execs who oversaw "devastating layoffs."
